Photo(s) Friday

The Cherry Trees are in bloom! If you're near Los Angeles, make a trip to The Huntington Library see the spectacular Cherry Trees and other beautiful, blooming plants. This Cherry Tree caught my eye in the parking lot.

Looking up into the tree gave me a feeling of being engulfed in bright pink blossoms!

6"x10" collage #03012017

I'm continuing to explore 6"x10" collages in-between working on fiber projects. My first collage of this series was posted here.

This collage is a slightly different style for me. The yellow with graffiti magazine page was the inspiration for this collage. It's a small piece that I wanted to get a big impact so I cut it up. The rectangles of light blue, dark blue and lavender was used to let the yellow graffiti and read shapes stand out. I'm happy with the way the rectangles overlap each other.

6"x10" Collage #02272017

I'm continuing to explore 6"x10" collages using magazine pages in-between working on fiber projects. My first collage of this series was posted here.

The subtle ombre of pink in the papers on both sides add a nice hint of interest. The main focus is the torn scraps in the center. I'm loving the size of the sketchbook that I use for these collages. It's manageable size for me to create.

6"x10" Collage #02202017

I'm continuing to explore 6"x10" collages in-between working on fiber projects. My first collage of this series was posted here.

Creating these collages is starting to become a good practice for me. Exploring different shapes and colors while using only magazine pages is pushing me to work on design. I, also, needed to find a way to label each collage. I decided to use the date the collage was finished. Some of the collages may take a few days to complete due to time restraints.

Collage #02202017 started with the background design. I wasn't sure what to put on top so I cut out these loose, oblong shapes.

Questions that I asked myself when looking at this collage: Do these loose, oblong shapes work with the background? Is there enough color contrast between the background and the shapes on top? Is the design interesting? My answers to all 3 questions is that I'm not sure. Hopefully, the more I create these collages the answers will be more evident.

6" x 10" Collage

I'm involved in two fiber art groups that have booked multiple exhibits this year. My "to do" list of fiber projects is steadily growing. Before I start tackling that list of projects, I cracked open a new 7"x10" Mix Media Sketchbook from Canson so I can loosen up with a quick collage. Ever since I mailed off my sketchbook for Las Laguna Gallery's Sketchbook West 2017, I wanted to continue my collage practice.

I've used Canson's products before but this is the first time I'm trying this sketchbook. There are 40 pages of heavyweight (138 lb) paper. I like that the pages are perforated to a finish size of 6"x10". In the future, I can remove any of the collages to be framed.

"Sketchbook West 2017" - Pages 49 to 62; outside covers

I took a few weeks off from working on my sketchbook for Las Laguna Gallery's "Sketchbook West 2017" exhibit to work on larger fiber pieces. There seems to be some good exhibiting opportunities in 2017 and I want to have new artwork to enter.

To learn more about the "Sketchbook West 2017" project, please click here.

Pages 49 and 50: This sketch was fun to create. I maintained a loose hand and worked very quickly. Very improvisational. Materials used: magazine pages, acrylic paint, oil pastels and glue.

Pages 49 and 50

Pages 51 and 52: I have a lot of triangle shaped magazine page scraps leftover from previous collages. I couldn't throw these scraps away. It was tough to find a ground color that harmonized with all the colors and hues in the scraps. I settled on a whitewashed Celadon. Materials used: magazine page scraps, acrylic paint and glue.

Pages 51 and 52

Pages 53 and 54: This collage started with a black/white/grey ground that didn't work out as planned. Instead covering the whole area, I added magazine scraps so some of the ground is showing. Materials used: magazine page scraps, acrylic paint and glue.

Pages 53 and 54

Pages 55 and 56:This sketch was created in 20 minutes. I didn't have much time that day and wanted to complete another sketch to stay on track to finish by February. Materials used: acrylic paint, oil pastels, paper dots and glue.

Pages 55 and 56

Pages 57 and 58: Another quick sketch/collage. I wanted to document an idea before I start my day. Materials used: acrylic paint, magazine pages, oil pastel and glue.

Pages 57 and 58

Pages 59 and 60: Another collage but this one took a few days to complete due to my busy schedule. Materials used: acrylic paint, magazine pages and glue.

Pages 59 and 60

Pages 61 and 62: A very quick collage. Materials used: magazine pages and glue.

Pages 61 and 62

Outside front and back covers: The outside cover of my sketchbook looked a bit worse for wear. I decided to adhere with gel medium some altered bleeding tissue papers. The front cover looks like a landscape. Now it's off to mail it to the gallery!

FAR Bazaar at Cerritos College

Over the weekend, I checked out the FAR Bazaar presented by Foundation for Art (FAR) at Cerritos College in the old Fine Arts Building. Cerritos College's old Fine Arts building is being demolished in February. The new Fine Arts building is already built. FAR Bazaar was a guerrilla art exhibit. My favorite kind of art exhibit. Here is some of the amazing artist and wonderful art that are on display.

Narsiso C. Martinez

Andrea Bersaglieri created delicate foliage prints. Yes, the ground is real grass!

Inside the wood frames is glue with the impression from Maria Villote's skin. She put glue on her skin then after it dried she peeled the glue off. The impression on the glue sheets were the texture from her skin. Very personal and creative!

"Sketchbook West 2017" - Pages 35 to 48

I took a few weeks off from working on my sketchbook for Las Laguna Gallery's "Sketchbook West 2017" exhibit to work on larger fiber pieces. There seems to be some good exhibiting opportunities in 2017 and I want to have new artwork to enter.

To learn more about the "Sketchbook West 2017" project, please click here.

Pages 35 and 36: I decided to jump back into this project with this very loose sketch. I had to remind myself that it's a sketchbook so by definition the art does not need to be finished looking. This sketch records a color story along with a design idea. Materials used: acrylic paint, pencil, oil pastel and tissue paper.

Pages 35 and 36
Pages 37 and 38: More pages that are a loose sketch used to record a color story along with a design idea. Materials used: acrylic paint, ultra thin black Sharpie and thick white Sharpie over white oil pastel.

Pages 37 and 38

Pages 39 and 40: I usually don't incorporate pastel colors in my art especially pastel pink. While I was leafing through a fashion magazine, I was struck by a 11 page spread featuring  model Aamito Lagum wearing pink clothes against a pink background. It was stunning! Further into the magazine, I noticed mint green used in a few advertisements. To document this color story for future reference, I cut up some of the magazine pages and glued into this sketchbook. Some white sharpie pen to add some additional elements. Materials uses: magazine pages, white Sharpie and glue.

Pages 39 and 40

Pages 41 and 42: Looking through the same magazine as I did for pages 39 and 40, I noticed some wonderful grey and red/burgundy/maroon elements. Materials used: magazine pages, glue and white, black, red Sharpies.

Pages 43 and 44: I enjoyed using pages from a magazine to create pages 39 to 42. To push myself a bit, I decided to create a collage using this material. I'm excited and happy with the way this collage turned out. Especially since I used a stick glue instead of Yes glue. The papers didn't wrinkle as much as pages 39 to 42. Materials used: magazine pages, acrylic paint and stick glue.

Pages 43 and 44

Pages 45 and 46: Another collage using magazine pages and acrylic paint.

Pages 45 and 46

Pages 47 and 48: Another collage using magazine pages and acrylic paint. See a trend happening?

instagram #2016bestnine

I noticed on instagram people were posting #2016bestnine photos. I decided to give it a try. The results of the top 9 images of 2016 were interesting to see.

The project in the upper right was a small sample that I wanted to re-create in a larger format. Many missteps has occurred along the way. Rethinking this piece so it can be finished in 2017.

Happily,  I see 4 paper collages and 1 fabric collage made the top 9. I really enjoyed the process of creating collages. I'm still trying to find my own style.

I want to thank those who have visited my blog this year. I look forward to sharing more in 2017.
  Happy New Year!

"Sketchbook West 2017" - Pages 33 and 34

A few more pages for Las Laguna Gallery's "Sketchbook West 2017" exhibit. To learn more about this project, please click here.

Pages 33 and 34: This collage uses junk mail and security envelopes. Love the brightness of this collage, which is in contrast to the limited color palette of collages 21 to 32.

Pages 33 and 34

Side note:  I noticed that using papers for the collages is adding a lot of bulk. So much so that it's getting harder to completely close the sketchbook and add elements near the gutter. Going forward I need to think about what materials to use when working on my sketches.
