6"x10" Collage #02272017

I'm continuing to explore 6"x10" collages using magazine pages in-between working on fiber projects. My first collage of this series was posted here.

The subtle ombre of pink in the papers on both sides add a nice hint of interest. The main focus is the torn scraps in the center. I'm loving the size of the sketchbook that I use for these collages. It's manageable size for me to create.

6"x10" Collage #02202017

I'm continuing to explore 6"x10" collages in-between working on fiber projects. My first collage of this series was posted here.

Creating these collages is starting to become a good practice for me. Exploring different shapes and colors while using only magazine pages is pushing me to work on design. I, also, needed to find a way to label each collage. I decided to use the date the collage was finished. Some of the collages may take a few days to complete due to time restraints.

Collage #02202017 started with the background design. I wasn't sure what to put on top so I cut out these loose, oblong shapes.

Questions that I asked myself when looking at this collage: Do these loose, oblong shapes work with the background? Is there enough color contrast between the background and the shapes on top? Is the design interesting? My answers to all 3 questions is that I'm not sure. Hopefully, the more I create these collages the answers will be more evident.

6" x 10" Collage

I'm involved in two fiber art groups that have booked multiple exhibits this year. My "to do" list of fiber projects is steadily growing. Before I start tackling that list of projects, I cracked open a new 7"x10" Mix Media Sketchbook from Canson so I can loosen up with a quick collage. Ever since I mailed off my sketchbook for Las Laguna Gallery's Sketchbook West 2017, I wanted to continue my collage practice.

I've used Canson's products before but this is the first time I'm trying this sketchbook. There are 40 pages of heavyweight (138 lb) paper. I like that the pages are perforated to a finish size of 6"x10". In the future, I can remove any of the collages to be framed.

"Sketchbook West 2017" - Pages 49 to 62; outside covers

I took a few weeks off from working on my sketchbook for Las Laguna Gallery's "Sketchbook West 2017" exhibit to work on larger fiber pieces. There seems to be some good exhibiting opportunities in 2017 and I want to have new artwork to enter.

To learn more about the "Sketchbook West 2017" project, please click here.

Pages 49 and 50: This sketch was fun to create. I maintained a loose hand and worked very quickly. Very improvisational. Materials used: magazine pages, acrylic paint, oil pastels and glue.

Pages 49 and 50

Pages 51 and 52: I have a lot of triangle shaped magazine page scraps leftover from previous collages. I couldn't throw these scraps away. It was tough to find a ground color that harmonized with all the colors and hues in the scraps. I settled on a whitewashed Celadon. Materials used: magazine page scraps, acrylic paint and glue.

Pages 51 and 52

Pages 53 and 54: This collage started with a black/white/grey ground that didn't work out as planned. Instead covering the whole area, I added magazine scraps so some of the ground is showing. Materials used: magazine page scraps, acrylic paint and glue.

Pages 53 and 54

Pages 55 and 56:This sketch was created in 20 minutes. I didn't have much time that day and wanted to complete another sketch to stay on track to finish by February. Materials used: acrylic paint, oil pastels, paper dots and glue.

Pages 55 and 56

Pages 57 and 58: Another quick sketch/collage. I wanted to document an idea before I start my day. Materials used: acrylic paint, magazine pages, oil pastel and glue.

Pages 57 and 58

Pages 59 and 60: Another collage but this one took a few days to complete due to my busy schedule. Materials used: acrylic paint, magazine pages and glue.

Pages 59 and 60

Pages 61 and 62: A very quick collage. Materials used: magazine pages and glue.

Pages 61 and 62

Outside front and back covers: The outside cover of my sketchbook looked a bit worse for wear. I decided to adhere with gel medium some altered bleeding tissue papers. The front cover looks like a landscape. Now it's off to mail it to the gallery!
