Just like Collage #1, I used my sewing machine to top stitch red thread instead of gluing the pieces together. I'm noticing that the majority of the collages have a vertical format. I have an idea...

I have an idea for a large scale project that where the middle section protrudes outward from a frame. Instead of diving right in like I usually do, I decided to create a smaller (6" x 8") version to work out any potential problems. 

 

I don't have many process photos for this project. I'll try to describe it as best as I can. I started by using the back side of a 6" x 8" canvas, 9 fabric covered heavy Pellon and blue painter's tape. This step was important to make sure the 9 Pellon pieces will fit and stay up.
  

The next step was to make patterns for the fabric that will cover the outside frame. I can't remember the last time I made a pattern. Believe me, it took a few tries to get the patterns correct. There are 3 patterns: one for the short sides of the frame, one for the longer sides of the frame and one for area that the protruding sections are set into. The last pattern didn't survive so I don't have an image of it to share. That pattern was 3" x 5" rectangle. Here are the 2 side patterns:

After I glued all the fabric in place, I loosely stitched all the protruding sections with Valdani Inc.  #133 Christmas Red thread.

For the most part, I like the way "Connected by Threads" sample tuned out. The only thing I might do differently is to shorten the protruding section a bit for stability.

Quick Painted Sketch Paper - Collage #4

I'm continuing to find the time to create quick painted sketch papers and collages. Here is Collage #4. Just like Collage #1, I used my sewing machine to top stitch red thread instead of gluing the pieces together. 

The main painted paper has such a nice gestural feel to it that I couldn't cut it up. Instead I collaged the other painted papers to frame it. I'm happy with the way this collage turned out.

Quick Painted Sketch Paper - Collage #1

The last post I talked about the quick painted sketch papers I've been creating the last few weeks. After I looked at the photos of the papers organized into different groups, I knew I had to make collages out of the papers. I still have limited time so, the collages will be created quickly. Instead of gluing the papers together, I brought out my sewing machine that has been collecting dust since November 2015 and top stitched the papers with red thread. This combination reminds me of the Day 7 of my Rolodex Project from March 2016 but with paper.

Quick painted sketch papers

The last few weeks I've been preoccupied with responsibilities that didn't leave the time or mindset to focus on creating new labor intensive artwork. Like most artists, I started to feel out of sorts because I didn't have a creative outlet. I decided that I had to make time (10-20 minutes depending on the day) to paint. Nothing fancy or thought out. Just a quick painted sketch. I'm using inexpensive paper and acrylic paint. So I wasn't overwhelmed with thoughts of what color to use, I decided to limit my palette to black, white and shades of grey. Lots of stress-relieving painted papers were created.

I decided to organize the painted papers into groups to see what was created.

Doing this step gave me the idea to create collages. Then next posts will show the resulting collages. Stay tuned!
