Rolodex Project - Day 31 Last Day

Day 31 of my Rolodex Project. Wow! The final day of this project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork is has commercial (orange sheer) and artist dyed (grey and dark olive green) fabrics. It's hand stitched with Valdani Thread Pearl Cotton #199 Dark Olive Green, #1310 Bright Yellow and #1333 Christmas Red.

The photo below is one favorite of this project. I love looking at all the pieces lining up in the closed Rolodex. Making 31 pieces was the right amount of artwork.

This project has been so much fun! It has kick started my creative energy again. I have to admit some days it was hard to think of creating a piece but I worked through it. In the future I will love to work on another project like this one.

Rolodex Project - Day 30

Day 30 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork has fabrics that fray really easily. It's hand stitched with Valdani Threads Pearl Cotton #1310 Bright Yellow and #1333 Christmas Red. The yellow and orange fabrics were cut in the squares but I don't recall using them on any projects. The denim I have used before and wanted it to fray. This piece isn't in my comfort zone and that's okay. It's all part of the process of making this project.

Rolodex Project - Day 29

Day 29 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made will all commercial fabric and it's hand stitched with Valdani Threads Pearl Cotton #10 Lemon. The horizontal fabric is wool scraps. It was tough to stitch through it so, I couched around each piece instead. The diagonal fabric is some sort of shiny polyester fabric that wasn't forgiving at all. This piece is a good sample to see how each fabric would take hand stitching for future reference.

Rolodex Project - Day 28

Day 28 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork has fabric that I painted many years ago and it's hand stitched with Valdani Threads Pearl Cotton #204 Bright Orange Coral, #1310 Bright Yellow and #1333 Christmas Red. This piece is another one that stitched in a meditative way. The stitches are precise but that's okay. It was all about the process.

Rolodex Project - Day 27

Day 27 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork has commercial fabric (light grey) and fabric that I dyed (navy and bright blue). It's hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #1 Black, #3 White and #205 Soft Sky Blue. I didn't want to think too much when I hand stitched this piece. Can you tell? It was a very meditative process.

Rolodex Project - Day 26

Day 26 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork is made from old kimono scraps and commercial fabrics. It's hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #823 Olive Green - Dark and #1333 Christmas Red. I wanted to make a piece with typical Christmas-y colors and have it not look like Christmas. I'm happy with the way this piece turned out.

Rolodex Project - Day 24

Day 24 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made with cotton fabric dyed with coffee and a piece of palm tree bark coated with gel medium. It's hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #10 Lemon.

Another primitive and raw looking piece similar to Day 23. I've been saving pieces of palm tree bark that I pick up on my morning walks. I want to develop a project or series that incorporates them but I'm not sure how to go about it. This piece is a sample on how hand stitching looks. I realize that the stitch pattern has to be thought out beforehand. Once you pierce the bark, a hole is left that is hard to mend unlike fabric

Rolodex Project - Day 23

Day 23 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made with scraps of 2 kinds of gauze and hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #105 Luminous Rich Navy and #205 Soft Sky Blue. This piece gives a primitive and raw feeling. I really like this one and trying to think of a way to make a larger piece in this style.

Rolodex Project - Day 22

Day 22 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made with a tie dyed piece of fabric that's 20 years old. It's hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #19 Deep Lime and #105 Luminous Rich Navy. I've always been drawn to green and blue color combination. The random hand stitching reminds me of flying bugs. I'm happy with this piece.

Rolodex Project - Day 21

Day 21 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made with scraps of light blue commercial fabric and a strip cut from a piece of art that I made a few years ago. It's hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #79 Lavender Light and #100 Denim Light. I like the contrast of the short and very long stitches. This piece has a graphic, geometric look that I like.

Rolodex Project - Day 19

Day 19 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made with a scrap of velvet that I discharged with bleach. It's hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #204 Bright Orange Coral. I tried a few different color threads but the Bright Orange Coral matched perfectly and didn't distract from the main part of the piece, which is the discharged design. Also, I didn't want to over stitch the piece. Just enhance it. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

Rolodex Project - Day 17

Day 17 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

I have to admit that today's 3" x 5" artwork was made without much thought. I was exhausted when I created it. That's okay because instead of blowing it off, I pushed myself to make one.

It's hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #50 Magenta, #105 Luminous Rich Navy, #204 Bright Orange Coral and #1310 Bright Yellow.

Rolodex Project - Day 16

Day 16 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made from a very sweet piece of fabric. It's another fabric that I don't know how it got into my stash. Hmmm? I hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #19 Deep Lime and #46 Rich Pink. This piece is definitely not my normal style but I really like the lightly stitched areas. It reminds me of my mom and both my grandmas. It reminds me of Love.

Rolodex Project - Day 15

Day 15 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made from muted fabric that I dyed. I hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #46 Rich Pink and #199 Dark Olive Green. I've had this idea to stitch a piece with large stitches going horizontally for some time now. It has a modern feel. I would like to incorporate horizontal stitching in a larger piece.

Rolodex Project - Day 14

Day 14 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made from a fun commercial multi-color fabric scrap and yellow painted fabric. I'm not sure where the multi-color fabric came from??? It was fun to made a fun, bright, colorful piece today. I hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #1333 Christmas Red

Rolodex Project - Day 13

Day 13 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made from used coffee filters. The part of the coffee filter that held the coffee is the warp. The back side of the coffee filter is the weft. Love the colors and texture. I hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #19 Deep Lime and #93 Bright Turquoise Medium. It's been awhile since I incorporated used coffee filters into my art. This small piece has inspired me to use this material again.

Rolodex Project - Day 12

Day 12 of my Rolodex Project. You can read about this project here.

Today's 3" x 5" artwork was made from silk organza scraps. The white silk organza is unaltered and the other is blue shibori dyed silk organza scraps from a 2013 project. I hand stitched with Valdani Pearl Cotton #3 White and #105 Luminous Rich Navy. This weaving was very delicate. I forgot how much silk organza moves when stitching it. Fortunately, I had the forethought to attach a light blue fabric first so the pellon didn't show through. I like the look of this piece but I'm not sure if I will try to make a larger piece.
